Today I am taking you to a village out of Pargana chail situated in Tehsil Kaushambi near Manjhanpur.
Dia is a well known village in the western part of district Kaushambi. It has been known as the seat of a big zamindari of Sherwani Pathans. In the doaba region we have very few authentic Pathan families. For instance, there is no Pathan family in the Pargana of Chail because Pargana Chail was almost entirely owned and dominated either by the Shaikhs & Sayyids and even today no Mughal or Pathan families could be found in Pargana / Tehsil Chail. In Tehsil Manjhanpur we have Dia and a few villages of Pathans are told to be in Pargana Kara.
Some of my friends had been insisting me to visit DIA since long. I too was intrigued to visit such a place which apart from a big seat of Zamindari was the lone reliable family of Pathan settlement in our area. Finally the day came when we started off for Dia, taking the road of Chail towards Purkhas and then after a lot of ups & downs the hills after criss-crossing a vast sandy land we reached the place. It seemed to me quite a beautiful location on the banks of River Yamuna.
Here I met Mr Pervez Khan s/o Mr. Afzal Ahmad Khan who after the due ‘khatir tawazo” took me round the village and showed the places associated with history. I met his elderly uncle as well who told me some very nice things.
Upon enquiry I was told that one Sultan Ahmad Khan of Kirah (Kirah is a place near Kabul ,Afghanistan) was a general in the Mughal army that came here with the royal army to take on a local rebellious Raja of Kaushambi in 16th Century. The Mughal army laid a siege around the fortress in Kaushambi for a long time but the Raja did not relent. Running short of food and funds, one day the Raja tried to escape through a tunnel in his fortress that opened on the banks of Yamuna in Dia. Sultan Ahmad Khan was stationed at Dia with the army .He caught the Raja at the banks of Yamuna and after a defensive battle between the royal forces and the loyalists of Raja, the peace was restored. The mission was over but Sultan Ahmad Khan had fallen in love with the place so much that he sought the permission to settle at Dia. Graciously Dia village was awarded to him and he along with his family started living here. The first mosque that he constructed can still be seen. This must have taken place between 1600-1700. The family had been serving the army ever since they settled here and till the beginning of 20th century each male member of the family was given the military training positively. The broken down tomb of Sultan Ahmad Khan and his wife still exists with a lot of graves of other family members around the tomb.It is a fine structure which should have been in a better condition , had it been noticed and taken care of by the Archaeological Deptt.
Now after 4/5 generations of Sultan Ahmad Khan we find the names of two sons of Farid Khan namely, Salar Jang Khan and Hingan Khan who were counted among the powerful men of the region. During the uprising of 1857, these two brothers were supporting Maulvi Liyaqat Ali Sahib’s mission and a letter sent to them by Maulvi sahib was caught in transit. Naturally the British were furious over the Dia Pathans. Incidentally at the same time, the villagers of few villages in Tahsil Mau in Banda rose in a body and attacked the Thanadar, Tahsildar and their whole amla and almost captured the treasury. The Tahsildar and Thanadar of Mau were close friends of Hingan Khan ,they called for help from Pathans of Dia. Mau was not far off across the Yamuna. These two brothers along with their fellow men crossed Yamuna to help their friends in Mau.They fought with the villagers and saved the officials made captive in the Tahsil. When they returned to Dia, they came to know about the disturbances in Manjhanpur Tahsili so they ran there and saved the Tahsil from being looted. When the British regained the control of the region, the Tahsildar and other officials came forward with a recommendation that Pathans of Dia should not be punished rather they should be rewarded as only because of them the Tahsil and treasury could be saved. The British were satisfied after verification and awarded them few villages in Tahsil Mau in Banda across the Yamuna.
District gazetteer of Allahabad ( 1911 ) confirms this information about them. A caption from the Gazetteer is here.
While visiting the mosque built by Hingan Khan in 1255 Hijri ,I could see a lot of old Arabic, Persian books of high learning related to Quran & Hadees kept in mosque testifying that pathans of Dia were educated people and not only they were wealthy, but they were Deendar (religious and pious )as well. Hingan Khan himself is reported to be man of great piety and devotion. I was told a few stories of his miracles there.
Hingan Khan constructed a huge Haveli that can still be seen in a tumble-down condition which is certainly deplorable. The present owners have shifted to Allahabad and Fatehpur for education and employment leaving it in the hands of nature to let it break down day by day. Mr.Parvez arranged for me the key of the said Haveli and thus I could enter into the huge mansion and could not help appreciating the architecture and beauty of the construction but at the same time I was reminded of the Quranic teaching that nothing is eternal. Everything is perishable. The wild shrubs and the grass have covered the wall, the plasters coming off, it was like a ghost’s villa. Inspite of all these carelessness, the mansion still bears a regal look and is maintainable, if tried.
Since the family is of Pathan origin and there are no authentic Pathan families in Chail, Manjhanpur and Karari, they used to have marital relations in Fatehpur, Gotni (Manikpur), Qaimganj (Farrukhabad) , Zafarpur in Kara areas out of their Pargana.
As for the land holdings, the Pathans of Dia held 16 Annas ( whole) of the following villages in Tehsil Manjhanpur
·         Dia
·         Chhekwa
·         Bhakanda
·         Jamalpur
Furthermore they held the following whole villages (16 Annas share) across the Yamuna in Tehsil Bara, Allahabad and Tehsil Mau in Banda.
·         Mankuwar
·         Obri
·         Murka
·         Bojh
·         Madha
One interesting anecdote I came to know here that Zamindars of Audhan used to go for hunting across Yamuna and they had to trek into these villages in Banda that were owned by Pathans of Dia. Zamindars of Audhan felt quite uncomfortable in poaching into others land so one day they approached the Dia pathans and purchased from them 4 Annas of land in Mankuwar village only for their hunting purposes. The Pathans of Dia confirm this to be true.
I could surmise easily that the Pathans of Dia were big magnates of the time but they have no air about their past, instead they are humble and modest. There was no bragging and no vain pride in them about their origin and zamindari etc at all. They are living in the present and trying to protect their lineage, identity, and of course the deen. Elders in the family are more inclined towards religious activities than management of lands etc. I found that their connection with Namaz and Quranic teachings have made them good human being than others. Surely our Deen brings very good changes in a person , provided he pays attention towards it. We can succeed in this world and hereafter only with our connection with Allaah swt and Rasool (Sallaahu Alaihi Wasallam) and not with wealth and lands…………

I returned from Dia with a feeling that we should work harder towards our Akhirat than our Dunia. People with wealth, lands, titles, mansions are no more and none of these could be any help to them. Our aamal counts more than anything else...........

Rahe Naam Allah ka.

Shaikhpur

Name & Origin

Ibrahimpur Bamhrauli is the real name of the village that is now known as Shaikhpur.  It is one of the latest founded villages in Pargana Chail. Actually it was a Mazra (hamlet) of the zamindars of Bamhrauli situated along the Grand Trunk Road near Talab Tiwari.
History
The history of the settlement of the Zamindars in this village starts in the late 18th century AD when a family of the Chaudharis of Bamhrauli took this village for their future abode. It was preceded by a dispute in the family of Bamhrauli over a piece of land. It was followed by a  lengthy legal battle for the same. One of the families, out of resentment and indignation, took a historical step to leave the village Bamhrauli and chose a hamlet of Bamhrauli (Mazra) named Ibrahimpur which was a pastureland for cattle grazing / rearing purposes . This Ibrahimpur Bamrauli is today famous as Shaikhpur.
The first branch who settled here was Chaudhari Shihabuddin's family who after 1857 was convicted for his active role in the Uprising and his share in Taluqdari was confiscated , his son Chaudhari Kabiruddin moved to and settled in the outskirts of village Ibrahimpur and his son was Chaudhari Sharfuddin who migrated after the partition. They had large land holdings in and around the village. Ahmad Kabir Hashmi represents the same family.
The next person who came and settled permanently here from Bamhrauli was Badi-uz-Zaman. He along with his family left his ancestral house at Bamhrauli and settled at Ibrahimpur after re-naming the village as Shaikhpur .He had two sons. His eldest son Buniyad Ali is the ancestor of the Hashmi family of Shaikhpur. His second son Muharram Ali laid foundation of a new village just a mile away from Shaikhpur and named it Muhiuddinpur .Thus Badi-uz-zaman became the common ancestor of both the villages; Shaikhpur and Muhiuddinpur.
As I mentioned earlier, Hashmis of Bamhrauli are descended from Makhdoom Shah Ismail Hashmi Suharwardi (Rahmatullah Alayhi) who is a grandson of Shaikh Bahauddin Zakaria of Multan. He came from Multan and settled in Bamhrauli. As per my understanding, He is one of the oldest saints of Allahabad and thus the Bamhrauli family may be taken as  one of oldest Muslim families living in Allahabad (excluding the families residing in Kara). The only other family that settled around is the family of Sayyid Shaban-ul-Millat Bayabani (Rahmatullah Alaihi) who died in 1359/60 at Jhunsi. He was the ancestor of the Bukhari Naqvi Sayyids of Jhunsi. These two families seem to be the oldest Muslim Khanwadas in Prayag (Allahabad). For details you may like to see Manba-al-Ansab.
Descendents of Makhdoom Shah

Makhdoom Shah Ismail of Bamhrauli  died in the year 1349 AD and over the period of seven centuries, his descendents spread widely & founded several villages in Pargana Chail as follows:-
1.    Bamhrauli Uparhar - Inhabited
2.    Neem Sarai     -  Family found in Allahabad, Karachi.
3.    Peepal Gaon    -  Almost abandoned.Family found in Allahabad, Karachi , US etc.
4.    Kuswan           -  Abandoned ,
5.    Korai Uparhar -  Abandoned , Original family is now found in Allahabad, Karachi etc.
6.    Fatehpur         -  Original family has lost all the relations with the rest of their clan.
7.    Shaikhpur        -  Ibrahimpur Bamhrauli - inhabited
8.    Mohinuddinpur-  Bhareta  - Inhabited
For a brief sketch of the life of Makhdoom Ismail, please visit this link.

I intend to write in detail about these villages as well as about the Jhunsi family in the days to come.

Genealogical Chart ( Shajra) of Hashmi family of Shaikhpur

I am pasting below a concise genealogical chart of the Hashmis of Shaikhpur. You may like to find out your maternal or paternal grand fathers here......

Now i would list all the descendents of the gentlemen named above , those who are not mentioned here would mean that they had no issue.

Landholdings & Property
Since Shaikhpur was a later settlement and the people had left their ancestral house and the property in Bamhrauli, with a very small amount of shares left with them in at least 10 villages around Bamhrauli , they took to the police & armed services to sustain. After the partition of the country the educated class migrated to Karachi that broke the back of the remaining village. Today Shaikhpur is inhabited and new houses are being constructed which assures that it will not be deserted and lay inhabited in near future. People have picked up jobs in different places and trying their best to raise their standard of living.

The irony of all the erstwhile zamindar villages of Chail is that when the sons of their soil started to flourish and established themselves well in other parts of world , they do not or did not look back at their village at all. This case may not be applicable entirely in case of Shaikhpur yet it is a bitter truth those who could have raised or helped the village guys grow did never look back and went away as if they have not heard about these ancestral soil......This is a stark, strange ,bitter , unacceptable truth witnessed in all the premier villages of Chail.

People

Hashmis of Shaikhpur are regarded to be amongst the Aali Nasab families of Pargana Chail owing to their being in direct line of Makhdoom Shah of Bamhrauli . As Shaikhpur was a new settlement , their marital relations are also few in number proportionately.

Amongst the well known from Shaikhpur in the last century were Jafar Ali, Nasrat Ali, Ashraf Ali, Ramzan Ali. Aashiq Ali was a pious Ibadat-Guzar person and Mushtaq Ahmad , Zahid Ali , Abdul Quddus, Muin ul Haq Marhoomeen

One of the family members named Ibn-e-Ali excelled as a bodyguard to the Viceroy of India and was a reputed man of his time.

Laiq Ahmad D.S.P was in the UP Police. Dr S A Hashmi in US and Abdul Rahman Hashmi exporters in Karachi are are from the same family.

This Abdul Rahman Alias Anwar needs a special mention as he is an outstanding example of being a pure self-made man and one of the original entrepreneur Chail has produced.

Mr.Abdul Rahman
The  Chairman of the Chayell Hospitality Group, Eastern Ontario, Canada, Mr. Abdul Rehman is the son of Mr.Khaleel Ahmad Marhoom of Shaikhpur who settled in Karachi after the partition of country.Endowed with a a keen business acumen coupled with born entrepreneurship , he started from very small businesses but worked strenuously to create better avenues and today he is the proud owner of a number of trading and business houses. He is the Chairman of Trade Overseas Services (Pvt) Ltd which is a well known knitwear garments’ export house. He acted as a buying agent for Innovative Merchandise Services, United States. He established a development and construction business by the name of Chayell Builders and Developers in Pakistan in 1999 which has constructed a number of high rise buildings and housing projects there.

He landed in Canada as an entrepreneur in 2002 and today stands tall after establishing a lot of new ventures in the eastern Ontario province.  The Chayell Hospitality Group he founded has entered the hotel business with the construction of the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Brockville, Ontario in 2009 and I am sure wIth the pace he is advancing, many more laurels are on his way.

Aftab Ahmad Hashmi, Director , Agricultural Bank of Pakstan, his brother Khalil Ahmad Hashmi was a lecturer and educator in Pakistan.

Mushtaq Ahmad Marhoom was an enlightened person who taught at the Majidia Islamia college in Allahabad. His sons Dr. Ahmad Masood was an officer in the planning commission , Govt of India while Dr.Rashid Masood was an economist with the Government of India. Both the gentlemen are residing at Gurgaon after the retirement.
However the most prominent son of Shaikhpur is Shah Habib Ahmad Hashmi who was a Buzurg of his time. Initially he was in the police service but a divine intervention changed the course of his life and with a few years he transformed into a Qawi-un-Nisbat Buzurg of the time. After migration, he settled in Karachi where he died in 1996.A lot of people in and around Chail were his followers. He built a mosque in the village and established a Madarsa as well which is still functioning under the management of the elders of the village. His son Shakeel Ahmad Hashmi superannuated as the Secretary, Minority affairs in Govt of Sindh, Pakistan.

Parsakhi

Hisampur Parsakhi is a village is Pargana Kara , Tehsil Sirathu, District Kaushambi situated along the GT Road. This village is populated almost wholly by Pandey Brahmins. They have an interesting account about their origin. Shahzadpur village is to the west of Parsakhi. Parsakhi has a distinct and important relation with regards to the Sadaat-i-Bukhari of Chail.

BUT

I did not go there to see the Pandeys , I visited Parsakhi to locate the tomb of Qazi Sayyid Hisam-ud-din Hasan Bukhari (Rah) who is the famed ancestor of all the Bukhari sayyids of Pargana Chail. Eight whole villages were / are populated with his descendents are as follows:-

1. Kokhraj ( Original Koh-i-khiraj)
2. Kohinam (Koh-i-Inam)
3. Kashia

4. AlamChand
5. Baserhi
6. Baragaon (+ Nazarganj ,a muhalla of Baragaon) ( + a branch in Qazi Rasoolpur)
7. Naraur or Narwar
8. Mendara ( across the ganga in Pargana Nawabganj, Allahabad

I would write about all these villages one by one but I am yet to visit all the villages. Till that time, please bear with me.

Now I come back to Parsakhi , Qazi Hisamuddin ( the correct pronunciation is Husam-ud-din) was the son of  Syed Shihabuddin S/o Makhdoom Nasiruddin Nar S/o Makhdoom Jahaniyan Jahan Gasht Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari Uchi.

By virtue of a great blunder committed by the compiler of Mirat al Jalali who declared Qazi Hisamuddin to be son of Syed Sadruddin Raju Qattal , from where did Syed Khalil Ahmad Mindarvi got this clue ? From where did he got this information ?

This means that the elders of this family had not only lost the touch with the original family at Uch but they also lost the original Shajra and when they could not find the broken links , they tied the name  of Qazi Husamuddin with the name of Sadruddin Raju Qattal.

I too wrote the same version of Mirat al Jalali few years ago when I started my reaserch but later on when I checked the original sources and found the information in MIrat al Jalali to be wrong and misleading. Then I took up the reasearch and found the name of Syed Shihabuddin to be the father of Syed Hisamuddin where it was mentioned that Syed Hisam's descendents are found in Allahabad. Later on I got it verified and confirmed with the Shajra Navees of Uchh as well.

My research says Syed Sadruddin Raju Qattal had no son with the name of Hisamuddin. My research is as follows:

Syed Sadruddin Raju Qattal Suhrwardi ( 730-827 AH)

Was a famous saint of Suharwardi order, was the son of Syed Ahmad Kabir and younger brother of Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari aka Makhdoom Jahanian Jahan Gasht of Uchh, He died on, 16 Jumada Al Aakhir 827 Hijra , 1424 AD leaving behind five sons  ( in some records only four) namely,

The names of real sons of Makhdoom Raju Qattal

  •      Jalaludddin Khwaja
  •         Roohullah
  •          Abu ishaq
  •         Abdul Azeez
  •         Banda nawaz
Out of them only three got their lineage continued. There is no one with the name of Husamuddin amongst his children. I checked this first in the books then I contacted Uchh Bahawalpur to find out the details. I was confirmed that there was no son of Raju Qatal with the name of Husamuddin.

The Story composed and written by Mirat al Jalali is as under (which I copied few years back )

Saiyyid Sadruddin Raju Qatal (Rah) of Uchh ( now in Bahawalpur, Pakistan) and grandson of Sayyid Ahmad Kabeer ( Rah). They are Naqvi Sayyids who came to India from Bukhara this is why they are called Bukhari. The elder brother of Saiyyid Sadruddin was Makhdoom Jahaniyan Jahan-Gasht (1308-1383), famous Suharwardi saint of 8th century hijri. His real name Sayyid Jalal-ud-din Bukhari. Jahanian travelled extensively across the sub-continent and won the title of Jahaniyan Jahan Gasht.Firoz Shah Tughlaq was highly under influence of Makhdoom Jahaniyan.(Rah). The whole family was suharwardi and mureed of Suharwardi Saints of Multan. ( Shaikh Bahauddin Zakaria and Shaikh Ruknuddin Abul Fath family) Rah.

Qazi Hisamuddin was born and brought up in Uchh and the learned readers who are aware of the Nawahun episode during the last time of Sayyid Jalaluddin Bukhari (Rah) would know that after the demise of Makhdoom Jahaniyan, how Hazrat Sadr-ud-din Raju Qatal (Rah) pursued the matter and went to meet Firoz Shah Tughlaq at Delhi. In this journey he was accompanied by his son ,Qazi Husam-ud-din as well and after when the whole episode ended.Syed Sadruddin expressed his wish to return home. Firoz Shah on hearing this, requested that if he is not staying at Delhi then at least allow Qazi Husam-ud-din stay back with him for he would be benefitted with his learning and piety. Hazrat Sadruddin relented to Firoz Shah’s request and thus Qazi Husam-ud-din got a time to stay in Delhi. At delhi he stayed with his maternals ( Qazi Nizam-ud-din) who were his in-laws also. ( Mirat al Jalali Page 40-45 By Khaleel Ahmad Mendarvi published 1918)

In the meantime firoz Shah got the news that the Bhars ( A belligerent community) have revolted and were creating disturbances on large scale in Parsakhi and Koh etc and furthermore they were oppressing the faithful(Muslims). When he received continued reports with details of the persecution and havoc the Bhars had done, he picked up a group of soldiers and put them under the baton of Qazi Husam-ud-din to punish those rebels and bring them all to the book. Qazi Sahib left Delhi and reached Kara first which was a provincial head-quarter and after consultation with the Subahdar he proceeded towards Parsakhi. After a pitched battle, the rebels were defeated and a lot were put to death. Qazi Sahib captured the fortress of Parsakhi and then went on to take control of Koh ( Inam & Khiraj). Later on he constructed a mosque there in Koh-i-Inam which is still extant.

Firoz Shah awarded him 22 (some say 76) whole villages and requsted him to stay there and guide the common man .( Mirat-al Kunain). The wife of astrologer of Bhars, a pandey who was killed in the action, came to Qazi Sahib along with her 12 children and begged his mercy as she was now without a support and there was no one to take care of her children. Qazi Sahib very graciously awarded some villages to her children for their sustenance and ever since then the Pandey Brahmins of the entire Kara & Chail area are residing in these villages. Charwa, Samda, Saunrai ,Parsakhi, Kashia Khurd etc are still populated by Pandey Brahmins. These are sometimes called Dugdha Brahmins. The wife of the same Pandey was so impressed with this kind gesture that she eventually became a Muslim at the hands of Qazi sahib.Qazi Sahib later on distributed the other villages he received in reward amongst his 8 sons and himself settled in Parsakhi after renaming it Hisampur. It was the year 1384 AD. ( Mirat al Jalali).

About the anectode “ Aath Qazi Barah Brahman” ( Eight Qazis & Twelve Brahmans) It seems to me that it denotes that Qazi Sahib took care of not only his eight children but also the twelve Brahmin children of the Pandey also. It also signifies that the whole area must have been in possession of either 8 Qazis and their sons or of the 12 Brahmans and their sons. Any other construed meaning should be supported by historical evidences.

Sir Henry M. Elliott in his monumental book"Memoirs on the history folklore and distribution of races" has mentioned that the story of the Brahmin lady marrying Qazi Sahib is improbable that such a connection took place at that early period of the conquest. He further mentions that the Brahmin lady distributed 48 villages between her 12 children. Now It seems to me and supports the view that the number of villages that Qazi Sahib received and what he distributed must have been larger than what has been reported so far.

As mentioned earlier, Qazi Husam-ud-din was married to the daughter of Qazi Nizam-ud-din Siddiqi ,of Delhi, she bore him eight sons. This Qazi Nizam-ud-din was the son of Qazi Muin-ud-din Siddiqui , Qazi of Delhi and he was the maternal uncle of Qazi Husam-ud-din. The names of 8 sons are as follows:-

1. Siraj-ud-din
2. Mohammad Alias Lahuri
3. Ruknuddin
4. Nizamuddin
5. Meet alias Mithai
6. Aleemuddin
7. Azeemuddin
8. Burhan-ud-din

However when I visited Parsakhi recently, it was a sorry state of affairs to relate, after enquiring a few villagers about a Muslim grave , we managed to finally see the green coloured grave of Qazi Hisamuddin over a small mound, lying under the sky without any canopy or any other structure beside. The Kot (Fortress) he captured could be seen eastward along with a well but the whole area seemed to be unattended and not taken care of. There was no Hujra as such mentioned in the books. All around there were Mahua and other trees. The Kot now houses a primary school run by the government and the nearby well do reminds that it might be the same well that was used by Qazi Sahib.

I had read in Mirat-al-Jalali that there were few more graves beside Qazi Sahib , like of Qazi Mahmood Bukhari and others , there was a Chiragh-daan, a Qanati Mosque on the west ………but alas none exist today………..It was a solace to see that at least Qazi Sahib’s mazar was spared.

We offered Fatiha to the rooh of Qazi Sahib and I stood there in silence in communion with the spirit of the lion resting there…….Indeed Qazi Sahib must have been very happy to see few people who travelled and remembered & visited him in 2011 after 700 years of his demise…….Rahmatullah Alaih. ( May Allah shower His blessing upon him !)

From the villagers I came to know that that seldom do they see any people ( Once or twice in a year or few years ) coming there.

Before I conclude, I would urge our Chaili brothers in general and the Bukhari brothers in special to please take care of your ancestor’s grave. You take pride in being a Sayyid , a Bukhari , A naqvi , but it is so shameful that the person who fathered you all is lying in such a condition , un-attended, forlorn……………….

Is this apathy linked to our Deeni condition as well?

When we neither respect nor observe our Deen, when we have left the teachings of Qur'aan and Sunnat , when we have given up the noble pursuit of learning ? When we have become no different than a materialistic community who lives just to eat, drink and enjoy this transient life ? When the worldly pursuits have become our sole aim in life ? When there is no Allah and Rasool in our life

Then

Is it strange that we have left the memory and memorial of our ancestor ???

Yun to Sayyid bhi ho , Mirza bhi ho, Afghan bhi ho
Tum sabhi kuchh ho , batao to Musalman bhi ho ???

Ijazat !
